Comcast Bringing 2 Gig Fiber Internet Speeds To 18 Million Homes This Year

Today Comcast announced they will be rolling out 2-Gigabits-per-second (Gbps) speeds over fiber to 18 million homes by years end. Early word is Comcast is calling the new speed plan Gigabit Pro.

Types of Fiber Internet Services

Fiber to the Node ( FTTN ) also known as Fiber to the Curb (FTTC):

This service is a hybrid type of configuration that uses a fiber optic backbone to the central office, junction box, or intellegent node in the nieighborhood. The connection from the node or CO to the customers home or premise is usually DSL over UTP copper wire or DOCSIS using coaxial cable (coax) depending on wether the service provider is a phone or cable company. This type of hybrid fiber optic connection is less costly than running fiber directly to the home or customer premise.

Fiber to the Home (FTTH) also known as Fiber to the Premises ( FTTP ):

This service installs a fiber optic line from the internet service carrier directly to the home or office. This type of fiber connection offers the fastest fiber optic speeds curretly available, but it's also more costly than FTTN due to the initial fee of installing a fiber line to each customer location.
